Auto Insurance Florida Coverage Tips

# What Does Auto Insurance Actually Cover?

A plain-English breakdown of Florida auto insurance: liability, PIP, uninsured motorist, collision, comprehensive, rental reimbursement, roadside assistance, and what “full coverage” really means.

What does auto insurance actually cover? Andy with Insurance Specialists of Southwest Florida breaks down car insurance coverage in simple terms so you can better understand what you are actually paying for.

If you live in Florida, understanding your auto insurance is especially important. Florida has PIP coverage, a high number of uninsured motorists, and other considerations that can affect both your coverage and your car insurance rates.

## Bodily Injury Liability

Bodily injury liability helps pay for injuries to other people when you are at fault in an accident. It can cover things like medical bills, lost wages, and legal defense costs up to the limits you select. This is the coverage that protects your assets if you cause a serious crash.

## Property Damage Liability

Property damage liability helps pay for damage you cause to someone else's property, most often their vehicle, but also fences, mailboxes, buildings, and other structures. Florida requires property damage liability, but the state minimum limit is low compared to the cost of today's vehicles.

## Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Florida is a no-fault state, which means PIP coverage helps pay a portion of your own medical expenses and lost wages after an accident regardless of who caused it. PIP has limits and conditions, including time frames for seeking treatment, so it is important to understand how yours works.

## Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage

Florida has one of the highest uninsured driver rates in the country. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage steps in when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough insurance to cover your injuries. For many drivers, this is one of the most valuable coverages on the policy.

## Collision Coverage

Collision coverage helps pay to repair or replace your own vehicle after a crash with another vehicle or object, regardless of fault, subject to your deductible.

## Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive coverage applies to non-collision losses such as theft, vandalism, fire, falling objects, flooding, hurricane damage, and hitting an animal. In Southwest Florida, comprehensive coverage matters more than many drivers realize.

## Rental Car Reimbursement

Rental car reimbursement helps pay for a rental vehicle while your car is being repaired after a covered loss. It is usually inexpensive, but it typically pays only up to a daily and total limit.

## Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance can cover towing, jump starts, flat tire changes, lockout service, and fuel delivery. Coverage details vary by insurance company, so check what your policy actually includes.

## What “Full Coverage” Really Means

There is no such thing as a standard “full coverage” policy. The term usually means liability plus collision and comprehensive, but it says nothing about your limits or deductibles. Two policies both described as full coverage can offer wildly different protection.

Do not just ask for full coverage. Ask about your specific limits and coverages so you can make a better decision when comparing auto insurance quotes.

## How Much Liability Insurance Do You Need?

Florida's minimum requirements are far below what a serious accident can cost. A good rule of thumb is to carry liability limits high enough to protect your income, savings, and other assets, and to consider an umbrella policy if you have significant assets to protect.

## When to Consider Dropping Collision and Comprehensive

As a vehicle ages and its value drops, the cost of collision and comprehensive coverage may no longer make sense compared to what the insurance company would pay out. If your car is worth only a few thousand dollars and you could comfortably replace it out of pocket, it may be worth reviewing those coverages with your agent.
