Do I Need Insurance for My Golf Cart in Florida?

Golf cart insurance in Florida depends on whether your cart is street legal, where you drive it, and how your community handles coverage. Here is how to know what you need.

Golf carts are everywhere in Florida. From Bonita Springs and Naples to The Villages and beyond, they are how families get to the pool, the clubhouse, and the neighbor's house for dinner. The big question we hear at Insurance Specialists of SW Florida is simple: do I need insurance for my golf cart in Florida? The answer depends on whether your cart is street legal, where you drive it, and what your community requires.

Street Legal vs. Non Street Legal Golf Carts in Florida

Florida law draws a clear line between two types of carts, and that line decides how you insure it.

A non street legal golf cart is a traditional cart that tops out around 20 mph. It is not titled or registered with the state and can only legally be driven on designated golf cart paths, on roads posted for golf cart use, and during daylight hours unless the cart has the proper lighting equipment. Most carts cruising inside gated communities fall into this category.

A street legal golf cart, often called a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV), is built or upgraded to travel between 20 and 25 mph and meets federal safety standards. To be street legal in Florida it must be titled and registered with the Florida DHSMV, have a valid VIN, headlights, brake lights, turn signals, mirrors, seat belts, and a windshield. The driver must hold a valid driver's license. Once a cart is registered as an LSV, Florida requires it to carry insurance just like a car.

Insurance for Street Legal Golf Carts (LSVs)

If your golf cart is registered in Florida and street legal, the state requires Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and Property Damage Liability (PDL) coverage. The simplest and almost always the cheapest path is to bundle the golf cart onto your existing auto insurance policy as another listed vehicle. You get matching liability limits, easy claim handling, and multi vehicle discounts on the rest of your auto policy.

If you own an LSV in Florida and have not added it to your auto policy yet, that should be your first call. Driving an unregistered or uninsured LSV on public roads is a ticket waiting to happen and a serious liability gap if you cause an accident.

Insurance for Non Street Legal Golf Carts

Even when a cart is not street legal, you are far from off the hook. Many Florida communities, especially gated neighborhoods, master planned developments, and golf cart friendly areas, require homeowners to carry liability insurance on their golf carts as a condition of the HOA rules. Always check your community's documents.

Beyond the HOA requirement, the risk is real. A golf cart is a 900 plus pound vehicle moving around children, pedestrians, parked cars, and other carts. A single at fault accident with an injury can produce a claim well into six figures. That is not a risk you want sitting on your homeowners policy.

Standalone Golf Cart Policy vs. Adding It to Your Home Insurance

Some Florida home insurance carriers will extend a small amount of golf cart liability coverage through your homeowners policy, but the limits are typically low and not designed to handle a serious injury claim. There is also a hidden downside: if you have a golf cart claim on your home policy, it becomes part of your home insurance loss history, which can raise your home premium or make you harder to place with another carrier at renewal.

A standalone golf cart policy solves both problems. It gives you proper liability limits, medical payments, and physical damage coverage on the cart itself, and it keeps any claim off your home insurance record entirely. The two carriers we write most often in Florida for non street legal golf carts are:

    - American Integrity Insurance - a Florida focused carrier with strong golf cart coverage options and competitive pricing.

    - Progressive - widely available, flexible coverage limits, and easy to bundle with auto.

In most cases, a standalone American Integrity or Progressive golf cart policy is only a small step up in price from the limited coverage your home carrier might offer, and you get significantly more protection plus the peace of mind that a claim stays off your homeowners record.

How to Decide What You Need

Here is the quick decision tree we walk Florida clients through:

    - Is your cart registered as a Low Speed Vehicle (LSV) in Florida? Add it to your auto insurance policy. Florida requires it.

    - Is your cart a traditional non street legal golf cart used inside a community? Get a standalone policy through American Integrity or Progressive for proper liability protection and to keep claims off your home insurance.

    - Does your HOA or community require golf cart insurance? Standalone policy is almost always the right call.

    - Are you only relying on a small endorsement from your home insurance policy? Let us quote the standalone option so you can compare cost vs. coverage. The difference is usually smaller than you think.
