Medicare Open Enrollment Starts October 15: What to Review Before December 7
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7. Here is what is changing for 2027 and why reviewing your plan is the smart thing to do.
Andrew KoehnekeOctober 12, 2026What are you doing between October 15 and December 7? If reviewing your Medicare health plan isn't on your list, please consider adding it. The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) is the time to review your current plan, make sure it still suits your health needs and change it if necessary.
Why Review Your Plan Every Year?
It's simply the smart thing to do. The AEP is the only time of the year you are allowed to shop and compare what you have now against new plans and benefits that may work better for your ever-changing circumstances. Plans change their costs, benefits, drug lists and doctor networks every year, so the plan that worked last year may not be the best fit next year.
Is Your Coverage Being Disrupted?
Some people have no choice but to make a change. Are you losing your current health plan? Has your plan moved out of the area? Is your doctor no longer accepting your plan? If any of these apply to you, AEP is the time to find new coverage that works for you and your circumstances.
Medicare Part D Is Changing for 2027
Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage is changing again for 2027. The annual out-of-pocket limit for covered Part D drugs will increase from $2,100 in 2026 to $2,400 in 2027, and the maximum Part D deductible will be $700.
After the deductible, your share of covered drug costs depends on your plan. Once your qualifying out-of-pocket spending reaches $2,400, you pay $0 for covered Part D drugs for the rest of the calendar year. Reviewing your plan each year helps you understand how these changes may affect your prescription costs.
Most Plans Have Gaps. Do You Know Yours?
Many people assume their health plan covers everything they need, until an unexpected expense reveals otherwise. Hidden gaps in coverage can lead to costly surprises that impact your savings, income and long-term security.
Medical events don't just impact your health, they impact your monthly budget. If you're retired or approaching retirement, there are plans that can provide cash during hospital stays, help cover out-of-pocket medical costs, reduce the risk of draining your savings and keep your income where it belongs: in your pocket. We can also review dental and vision coverage options.
